Physicians Mutual is seeking a strategic Government Relations Officer to lead our state and federal public policy engagement.

This role goes beyond tracking legislation. It anticipates emerging regulatory trends, shapes advocacy strategy, strengthens key policymaker relationships, and ensures our company maintains a respected and influential voice in discussions that impact our policyholders and business. Responsibilities

Strategic Policy Leadership

  • Develop and execute comprehensive federal and state advocacy strategies aligned with corporate objectives.
  • Anticipate emerging legislative and regulatory trends and advise leadership proactively.
  • Shape and advance policy priorities through direct engagement, coalition-building, and trade association leadership.
  • Ensure Physicians Mutual maintains a respected seat at the table in key legislative and regulatory discussions.
  • Partner with executive leadership to define annual public policy priorities and measurable objectives.

Federal Engagement & PAC Leadership

  • Partner with senior leadership to define and execute Political Action Committee strategy.
  • Support recruitment and engagement of PAC members while ensuring strategic and compliant fund deployment.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with Nebraska’s federal delegation and other targeted policymakers.
  • Ensure full compliance with all lobbying and PAC regulations.

Executive Presence & Representation

  • Represent Physicians Mutual before regulators, legislators, trade associations, and industry groups.
  • Translate complex statutes and regulations into practical business guidance for internal leaders.
  • Communicate confidently and strategically in high-visibility and unscripted environments.
  • Evaluate legislative proposals through both regulatory and customer-impact lenses.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on public policy implications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (JD, MPA, MBA, or related field) preferred.
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in government relations, public policy, regulatory affairs, or insurance advocacy.
  • Demonstrated success influencing public policy at the state and/or federal level.
  • Strong understanding of legislative and regulatory processes, particularly within insurance or financial services.
  • Experience engaging trade associations, regulators, and elected officials.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with executive presence.
  • Ability to operate with discretion, political sensitivity, and sound judgment in complex environments.
  • Resilience and confidence in high-visibility, fast-moving settings.
